 Frequently Asked Questions
Plesk 5.0 Is A Step Forward
How well do I need to know UNIX or Linux in order to use Plesk Server Administrator?
The product's interface reduces the need to understand how a server's operating system works, because it allows the average computer user to perform tasks that previously required a programmer. However, some UNIX/Linux skill is required of an administrator in order to install Plesk Server Administrator on a server. Also, it helps to know a little UNIX/Linux and web authoring in order to transfer existing websites and/or configurations for use with the Plesk server Administrator.
Will I be able to run my own custom scripts on a server running PSA?
Yes you can run custom scripts on a PSA managed server. Custom cgi, perl, and shell scripts etc… will work normally on a PSA managed server.
What programming language is PSA written in?
Three languages - PHP (server admin interface), C (utilities), and JavaScript (utilities).
How can I be sure that my server information is protected while using PSA?
For the PSA control panel interface, a 128-bit encrypted Secure Socket Layer (SSL) connection is established between and client machines. The SSL certificate used by PSA is a "dummy" certificate that can stillbe used to establish a secure connection, but customers are encouraged to purchase their own SSL certificate for the PSA server so that they can be sure that the connection is authenticated. PSA also requires the use of MD5 shadow passwords on the server to protect system account information
How does PSA protect against unauthorized access and tampering?
The PSA control panel interface employs the following measures to prevent unauthorized access:
  • Password authentication is required for the administrator and his/her clients to use the PSA control panel.

  • Password lockout and timeout settings. The administrator can set the amount of allowable unsuccessful login attempts and the time for which an account is locked after the number of unsuccessful login attempts have been exceeded. Also, the administrator can set the amount of time that must pass before a login can be re- attempted after an unsuccessful login.

  • The control panel interface is deployed on the PSA server using encrypted server-side active content (PHP) to prevent destructive or other undesired alteration of its functionality.

 Three Administration Levels
Server Administration, Reseller and User Administration
Server Administration
This is PSA's highest single server administration level. SysAdmins and Web hosting Administrators setup, manage, and control their web servers and its services from this interface. PSA 5.0 provides the platform and the interface for an administrator to setup and create limitless pre-defined re-usable reseller and domain specifications and packages. This portal is completely customizable with skins, and offers server level access to the Plesk Commerce Alliance portal called MPC.
Reseller Client Level
As the quintessential power interface for account users on the system, reseller clients work within their predefined plan limits set by the Sys Admin. With a single secure login non-technical personnel are wizards at this level where they can create domains, manage hosting, setup email accounts, create file transfer protocol accounts (FTP), limit traffic, and even select multiple languages for their system's interface to be viewed. PSA 5.0 Master empowers clients to act like Sys Admins and do their own private labeling and brand their systems with their own hosting interface.
User, Domain Level
Plesk has created a unique login area for individual non- technical domain owners to manage mail, create protected directories, setup anonymous and standard FTP accounts, manipulate and manage FrontPage 2002 and 2000 accounts, manage SSL certificates, register domains, rotate log files, view graphical statistics, manage multiple databases and database users and utilize a web-based email service. This domain management level of PSA 5.0 Master makes users more self-reliant and less support-intensive.
